Modern boxing features two gloved fighters competing in a six-meter-squared ring enclosed by a row or four ropes. Fighters compete for a set number of three-minute rounds with the winner being decided either by knockout or by points awarded by a panel of judges.
To ensure that each bout is a fair competition between two equally matched individuals, fighters are separated into 18 different weight divisions. The most prominent of theses weight divisions includes Heavyweight, Welterweight, Lightweight and Flyweight. Divisions like Stawweight and Atomweight are rarely if ever featured at the professional level. Additionally, the exact definition and name of divisions can vary between professional boxing associations. For example, the WBA’s lightest weight division is Light minimumweight while the WBC refers to the same weight division as Atomweight.
History of boxing
Combat sports like boxing and wrestling predate all others with roots that can be traced as far back as the Sumerian empire. Although primitive, reliefs discovered in Iraq show that these early organized bouts feature gloved opponents not unlike one might see in a modern boxing ring. The combatants used leather wraps to protect their hands and bouts often continued until incapacitation or death.
In Ancient Rome, boxing became a popular spectator sport. Slaves of different masters were pitted against each other in crudely drawn circles on the ground. It is believed that the origins of the name of the modern boxing “ring” is derived from these bouts.
In 393 AD, boxing was outlawed in Rome due to its excessive brutality. Ironically, this decision was made at the height of the gladiator period, with gladiatorial combat seemingly being viewed as less brutal than boxing. The sport wouldn’t again see mass adoption until the 16th century when it resurfaced in London.
Early boxing in London was a brutal winner takes all bareknuckle brawl that often led to severe injury and even death. Over the next 100 years, the Broughton's rules, the London Prize Ring Rules, and the Marquess of Queensberry rules were introduced ushering in the modern sport. These various iterations of universal boxing rules transformed the sport from a blood sport to a combat sport with mainstream acceptance.
