Villa, Leicester renew their rivalry

2019/20 Premier League

Round 16

7-9 December 2019

Aston Villa and Leicester City will renew their rivalry in the English top flight when they meet at Villa Park on Sunday 8 December 2019, kick’ at 17:00. The match is one of 10 spread from 7-9 December in the 16th round of the current Premier League season.

Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy

Villa come into the game on the back of a midweek 2-1 loss away to Chelsea, with the result leaving the Birmingham club just one point above the relegation zone. Manager Dean Smith wants to see his side be more confident against the big teams.

“I feel we can be as good as teams like Chelsea but we’ve got to be more consistent in our play to do that,” explained Smith. “The word for me is belief. When we played with a lot of belief then we went toe-to-toe and put them under pressure. There were times when we sat off too much and allowed them to play.”

Leicester equalled their club-record run of seven straight wins by defeating Watford 2-0 at home on Wednesday night, with goals from Jamie Vardy and James Maddison. The Foxes are secure in second place, eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool but three clear of nearest chasers Manchester City.

“I came to here because I felt the potential in the team,” said manager Brendan Rodgers. “They are performing well and consistently and they have shown they can do that. If you are asking them to compete at the top end of the table it is about encouragement and giving them the belief in order to do that.”

Aston Villa forward Anwar El Ghazi

In head-to-head stats, Villa and Leicester have met in 83 previous matches. The Foxes have claimed 34 wins compared to 27 for the Lions, while 22 games have been drawn.

The teams last met in the Premier League in the 2015/16 season, with Leicester City taking four points off Villa thanks to a 3-2 win at the King Power Stadium and 1-1 draw at Villa Park in the return game.
