Tottenham take aim at Middlesbrough in FA Cup

2019/20 FA Cup

Third Round Proper (Last 64)

4-6 January 2020

Tottenham Hotspur will be aiming for a convincing win when they tackle hosts Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium in an FA Cup Third Round match on Sunday 5 January 2020, kick-off at 17:01.

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho

Middlesbrough continued their fine recent form by winning 2-0 away to Preston North End in a midweek Championship clash, featuring a goal from Rudy Gestede – his first in almost two years.

“I thought the performance they put in was outstanding,” said manager Jonathan Woodgate, who added: “It comes down to team spirit. Even when we were losing games, we had that team spirit, whether people believe me or not.”

Spurs come into the clash on the back of a disappointing midweek result, having been beaten 1-0 at Southampton in a Premier League clash on Wednesday afternoon.

Manager Jose Mourinho will be without forward Harry Kane, who appeared to suffer a hamstring injury: "Harry plays every minute, he plays all the time," said Mourinho. "It might be big, it might be small. For sure, he will be out."

The Portuguese manager added, “We need time to work. We need what we are not having. We need to focus on what we have.”

In head-to-head terms, Middlesbrough and Tottenham have met in 81 previous matches. Boro have claimed 31 wins compared to 30 for Spurs, while 20 games have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meetings were in the 2016/17 Premier League season, with Tottenham completing a ‘double’ by winning 2-1 away and 1-0 at home. This will be the first FA Cup match between Spurs and Boro since 1966.
