The Champions League
is where champions are born. It is the never-ending theatre of dreams for fans and players alike. It is where the giants of football carve their names into the record books and where careers are forged… and destroyed.
Flip through the pages and you will find the top goalscorers in the history of the competition. These are the men who confound their opponents, critics and themselves when they elevate the beautiful game to a dazzling display of singular awesomeness.
Who are these wizards with the ball? Well it is surely no surprise that two magicians - Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi - stand head and shoulders above the rest. They have 128 and 114 Champions League goals respectively… and they aren’t finished yet!
Then there are players like French star Karim Benzema and Polish striker Robert Lewandowski who slot in at fourth and fifth place. As these men are still active as professional football players, we thought we would shine the spotlight on a few of the former superstars of the UEFA Champions League instead.
Raul was - and still is - a legend at Real Madrid. The prodigious striker scored the bulk of his Champions League goals (66) for the Spanish club, before ending his 16-year career in Spain as the second highest goalscorer in Los Blanco’s history.

Along with a long list of domestic honours Raul won three Champions League titles and was named the Best Striker in the World. Today the Spaniard is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in the country… and arguably in Europe too!
Ruud van Nistelrooy
Ruud van Nistelrooy may have made his name at Manchester United but the lethal Dutch striker has the honour of being the top goalscorer in three different domestic leagues - the Dutch Eredivisie, the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga.
Van Nistelrooy is also the sixth highest scorer in the history of the Champions League, netting eight goals for PSV Eindhoven, 35 for Manchester United and 13 for Real Madrid. During his tenure with the Red Devils he won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Community Shield.
Van Nistelrooy also bagged two La Liga titles and the Supercopa with Real Madrid and scored 35 goals in 70 appearances for the Netherlands national team!
Former French striker Thierry Henry scored seven Champions League goals for Monaco, 35 for Arsenal and eight for Barcelona, a tally that sees him slip in to seventh place on the all-time goalscorer list.
Henry, who was often controversial both on and off the field, arguably reached his peak under the watchful eyes of manager Arsene Wenger at Premier League club Arsenal.
During his spell in England Henry won two league titles and two FA Cups and became the all-time leading goalscorer for the Gunners, scoring 228 goals in all competitions.
At Barcelona he won the historic treble - La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the UEFA Champions League - and became the top scorer in the French national team, netting 51 goals in 123 games!
