Can the Citizens claim their third consecutive title and fifth overall?  Or will there be a dark horse that joins the ‘big six’ clubs that have dominated proceedings since 1992?
Before we get to the business end of the English Premier League, let’s take a look at a few facts and stats that have made the tournament a dazzling global event.

English Premier League Structure

This season as with every season the top 20 clubs in the top tier of English soccer compete against each other home and away.  The points earned for a win (3) or a tie (1) determine which club tops the EPL table at the end of the season to become champion one and all.
The three teams that finish at the bottom of the table are relegated to the Championship.  Relegated clubs are replaced by the best performing teams in England’s second most prominent professional football league.

The Foreign Influence

The EPL 2019 / 20 season is also the first season in nine years not to have a Welsh club in the fray.  That doesn’t mean there isn’t a strong foreign influence over what is essentially an English event.  This season there are eight players who are not English captaining English clubs!
There are also dozens of players who hail from all corners of the globe - Kenya, Denmark, Serbia, Jamaica, Spain, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Senegal - and the list goes on and on.  The foreign invasion may have started slowly but it’s gained momentum over the years.

Harry Kane in action for Tottenham Hotspur.
In the past eight seasons only one English player has topped the goalscorer stats and that’s Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.  He claimed the kudos back to back in the 2015 - 16 and 2016 - 17 seasons.
Other than that, it’s been a line-up of foreign born stars - Robin van Persie of the Netherlands, Luis Suarez from Uruguay, Argentine Sergio Aguero and most recently three African players in the form of Mohamed Salah of Egypt, Sadio Mane from Senegal and Gabon born Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang!

Attendance Figures

Last season more than 14,5 million roaring fans got behind their respective clubs to urge their players to bigger and better things.  This is in stark contrast with the 2016 - 17 season when the attendance figures dropped to a little over 13,6 million people, the lowest turnout in several years!  Can EPL 2019 / 20 set a new attendance record?
