Reigning MotoGP World Champion Joan Mir will be hoping to wring more speed and competitiveness out of his Ecstar Suzuki at Round 14, the San Marino and Rimini Riviera Grand Prix, set for the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on Sunday 19 September 2021.

Mir came home in third place at the Aragon Grand Prix this weekend, the ‘best of the rest’ behind the epic battle for victory between Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez. The result has seen Mir slip behind race-winner ‘Pecco’ in the Riders’ Championship standings: the Suzuki man has 157 points to Bagnaia’s (Lenovo Ducati) 161, while Monster Energy Yamaha pilot Fabio Quartararo continues to dominate at the top with 214.

“Finishing third was not a bad result,” said Mir. “Maybe I could even aim for victory if I hadn’t been in traffic for the first few laps. For sure the start was complicated, since I lost time and consequently it was impossible to bridge the gap to Marc and Pecco.”

The 24-year-old Spaniard is hoping that Suzuki can ramp up their straight-line speed in order to compete at Misano this coming weekend: “Without acceleration, we cannot fight for the victory. I think it’s obvious given that we struggle on the straight and with the Suzuki we can’t overtake. I’m giving 100 percent, but we need a step forward, even if it’s not easy.”

Mir added, “In addition to this aspect, we need to do something about the holeshot [starting procedure] so that we start on an equal footing with the others. If we were able to solve these two problems it would already be an excellent starting point”.
