The Italian legend has endured one of his worst seasons in the MotoGP having finished 12th in the most recent race, the Valencian Grand Prix.

Rossi is the most decorated rider in the history of the Portuguese Grand Prix with four titles which he clinched in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007.

The Valencian Grand Prix was won by Yamaha's Franco Morbidelli with Jack Miller of Ducati finishing second.

KTM rider Pol Espargaro secured a third spot finish in an enthralling race in Valencia.

Newly crowned MotoGP world champion Joan Mir of Suzuki is placed at the top of the riders' standings and he is followed by Morbidelli and Suzuki's Alex Rins respectively.

Rossi finds himself on the 15th spot on the standings having accumulated 62 points and he has been forced to retire from four races this term.

Rossi, who boasts seven MotoGP world titles, hopes to perform well at the Portuguese Grand Prix where he has enjoyed a lot of success in his illustrious career.

“Now we hope that next week in Portimao we can feel better with the bike and the tyres so we can be more competitive,” Rossi said.

“The track [Portimao] is fantastic, and coming from Valencia is even more fantastic. I felt good during the test, it’s quite different from all the other tracks.

"But everything is correlated to the feeling of the bike and how the tyre will work because here we tried everything but never had grip.”

Suzuki are placed at the top of Manufacturers' Championship standings, but they are level on points with second-placed Ducati (201).

Yamaha are placed third with 188 points with one crucial race left this term.
