Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi will be hoping to clinch a record-extending fifth Grande Premio MEO de Portugal title on April 18.

The Italian legend has finished outside the top 10 in the first two races of the 2021 season having settled for a 16th spot finish at the recent Doha Grand Prix on April 4.

Rossi, who finished 12th at season-opener, Qatar Grand Prix on March 28, is the most decorated rider in the history of Grande Premio MEO de Portugal with four premier-class titles.

The latest race in the 2021 campaign was the Doha Grand Prix which was won by Fabio Quartararo and was followed by the Ducati duo of Johann Zarco and Jorge Martin respectively.

Zarco is placed at the top of the Riders' standings and he is followed by the Yamaha duo of Quartararo and Maverick Vinales,

Rossi, who has won seven MotoGP world titles, is placed 14th on the standings having accumulated four points.

The Urbino-born rider will now be taking part in one of his favourite races, Grande Premio MEO de Portugal where he will be confident of securing a win.

Rossi, who is the only road racer to have competed in 400 or more Grands Prix, explained what makes the Algarve International Circuit fantastic.

"The Portimao circuit is fantastic, it’s something different to all of the rest, but on the other side of things, it’s very difficult. It’s a track that you need a lot of time to learn and every time you race there you can improve on something," Rossi said.

"We found some new settings on the bike on the Sunday morning warm-up session of the DohaGP, which meant that I was able to maintain a better pace but we were hampered for the bad starting position.

"We hope that we can be stronger at this third GP and be more competitive, but also in Europe as a whole – there are a lot of tracks there that are good for me."

Yamaha are placed at the top of Constructors' Championship standings and they are followed by Ducati and Suzuki respectively.
