Pacquiao, Broner go to war for the WBA Welterweight belt

WBA Welterweight Championship

Manny Pacquiao v Adrien Broner

Sunday, 20 January 2019
MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, United States

The World Boxing Association Welterweight championship will be up for grabs when title holder Manny Pacquiao takes on Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, United States on Sunday 20 January 2019.

Pacquiao is a boxing legend in his own right and will be having his 70h professional bout. The eight-time champion retied from the sport in 2016, but has since returned and had two fights: a contentious loss to Australian Jeff Horn and a victory over Lucas Martin Matthysse to win the WBA Welterweight championship last July.

Adrien Broner will challenge ‘Pac Man’ for the WBA Welterweight belt.

Broner, by contrast, is looking to shrug off the tag of being a career underachiever. The 29-year-old was once touted as the heir to Floyd Mayweather’s throne, but three defeats to current or former world champions in Marcos Maidana, Shawn Porter and Mikey Garcia has undermined his hopes of reaching the peak of the sport.

Yet a win over eight-time champion Pacquiao would surely be enough for the American to move back into true world title contention and have the chance to fulfil his immense potential.

Pacquiao came out of retirement in 2017 and has since returned to the peak of his powers.

Pacquiao, with his experience and pedigree, is the favourite for the fight despite being 11 years older than Broner (who is also taller and has a longer reach). In fact, the Filipino has declared his intention to knock the American out and inflict a fourth career defeat on him.
