2021/22 English Premier League

Matchday 37

Southampton v Liverpool

St Mary's Stadium
Southampton, England
Tuesday, 17 May 2022
Kick-off is at 20h45

Liverpool will look to keep their Premier League title hopes alive when they travel to the south coast to take on Southampton at St Mary's on Tuesday, May 17.

The Reds lost ground to Manchester City in the race for league honours after being held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham on Saturday, May 7, which saw them fall three points behind the leaders.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side remain unbeaten in their last 16 top-flight games ahead of the clash with Aston Villa on Tuesday, May 10, where a win would take them level with City on 86 points.

Klopp is refusing to give up on the dream of winning a second title in three years and said all the Merseysiders can do is to claim maximum points from their three remaining matches in the hope that the Citizens slip up.

"It's clear it is not over because we both have three games to play and my concern is how can we win our games," the German said.

"We have absolutely no hand in how City play their games but before they are played, we should not add on points. We don't do that and I'm pretty sure City is not doing that. [Until] it's not reachable anymore, why should we stop believing?"

The Saints are there for the taking after a 3-0 reverse at Brentford extended their winless run to four outings.

The travelling support turned on manager Ralph Hasenhuttl at the Brentford Community Stadium, chanting "sacked in the morning" after a seventh defeat in 10 games.

Hasenhuttl conceded his players are lacking in confidence at the moment, which was evident at both ends of the pitch as they wasted numerous chances to get on the scoresheet against the Bees.

"We are not confident at the moment. We have to find a way, it's easier with some positive results," the German said.

"I don't know that there is anything else that could be done in those situations tactically. The goals did not come from being outnumbered - even for the second it was three against one, but they score three times in those moments and we did not score all afternoon."
