Lampard’s Derby Ready To ‘Ram’ Leeds at Elland Road

2018/19 Championship Playoff

Leeds United vs Derby County

Semi-final 2nd leg
Elland Road, Leeds
Wednesday, May 15th
Kick-off at 21:45 (9:45pm)

Frank Lampard will lead his Derby County side to Leeds United on Wednesday looking to get one over Marcelo Bielsa, as they look to overturn a one-goal deficit heading into the second-leg of their playoff semi-final affair with the winner just one game away from the promised land of a return to the English Premier League.

The managerial pair have had a fractious relationship during their respective maiden campaign’s coaching in England’s Championship. Bielsa was accused by Lampard of sending ‘spies’ to go and scout his opponents training sessions prior to matches against them – a claim which the Argentine refused to deny, rather admitting to doing so and in the process adding even more fuel to an already raging inferno.

The Whites looked set for automatic promotion for months on end until they capitulated at the death, losing five of their last nine matches and having to ultimately settle for a place in the playoffs. The Peacocks top-scorer in 2018/19, Kemar Roofe, netted the only goal of the game at Derby in the first leg – his 15th goal of the season - to end a run of four matches without a victory for the visitors.

The Rams secured their spot in the prestigious playoff semi-final with a 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on the final day. They will be eager to return to the top-flight for the first time in over a decade since they racked up the worst-ever Premier League record by a team in a single season when they managed just 11 points in 38 games in the 2007/08 campaign.

Derby County recent results:

11/05 – Derby 0-1 Leeds
05/05 – Derby 3-1 West Brom
01/05 – Swansea 1-1 Derby
27/04 – Bristol 0-2 Derby

Wednesday will see the pair clash for the fourth time already since the league started way back in August, with Lampard still searching for his first taste of success over his vastly more experience opposite number. In three matches thus far, Leeds have registered three victories found the back of the net seven times compared to Derby’s solitary goal.

In the corresponding Championship fixture last season Derby County snapped a four-game winless streak at Elland Road as they came away with a hard-fought 2-1 win, after trailing at half-time, courtesy of a late Sam Winnall brace.

Kemar Roofe is the man to watch out for again this week, having scored four times for United in the three appearances against Derby this season, including one in the 2-0 win for the home side in this fixture back in January.
