The Kenyan Premier League season comes to an end on Saturday with attention focused at the bottom of the table where Sofapaka and Ushuru will be fighting to survive.
Tusker have the 2016 title wrapped up with one match to spare which is has been reduced to a dead rubber against Gor Mahia. The first relegation battle takes place at Kasarani where Posta Rangers take on Ushuru. The Tax Men need just a draw to survive relegation while Rangers on the other hand will finish third if they beat Ushuru. The added significance is that Ushuru beat Rangers to deny them a chance to be promoted to the KPL in 2013. This then is an opportunity for Rangers to finally exact their revenge by sending the Tax Men crashing out of the top division. Working against Ushuru is the fact that they have never won the final game of the season since being promoted to KPL three years ago.
At Machakos Stadium, Sofapaka will need to beat Thika United to secure their tier top status next season. It has been a disappointing season for Sofapaka who made history in 2009 by winning the KPL title in the same year they were promoted from the lower league. Since their debut season they have never finished beyond fifth place since 2009 but this year has been a torrid one for the team who lost a majority of their key players at the beginning of the year. The team signed experienced players in the mid-season transfer window in a desperate move to salvage a sinking ship.
Sofapaka made things difficult for themselves by throwing away a two goal lead against Mathare United two weeks ago. The match eventually ended 2-2 leaving them needing to win and hoping that Ushuru loses to keep their top flight status.
