Reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama is excited to have a shot at gold on home soil.
The 29-year-old was unsure if he would even get to represent his country at the men's golf tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

A month before the opening round, Matsuyama tested positive for Covid-19. He went 10 days without hitting a shot during self-isolation as a result and a string of positive results thereafter, even though he was asymptomatic, made for a nervous few weeks.

“I wasn't really sure if I'd be able to make it to the stage here,” Matsuyama said Tuesday. “So finally, I'm here. And I'm very happy to be able to be here.”
Now more than even, the spotlight will be on Matsuyama as he aims to land gold for his country.

Matsuyama's compatriot Rikuya Hoshino was given the honour of  hitting the opening tee shot at the tournament which gets underway at Kasumigaseki Country Club on Thursday.
