Another season of dominance for Man City?

2021-22 Premier League season

13 August 2021 – 22 May 2022

Manchester City will look for another season of dominance when the 2021-22 Premier League season gets underway next month, with manager Pep Guardiola hoping to continue to add to his legacy of success with the Citizens.

City comfortably claimed the Premier League title last season, ending 12 points clear of nearest chasers Man United to pick up a third championship in the past four seasons. Yet the campaign overall did end on a sour note, as they succumbed to Chelsea in the final of the UEFA Champions League.

Nonetheless, Manel Estiarte, Head of Player Support and Protocol at the club, claimed it was a brilliant campaign from City and manager Guardiola.

“Before and after the final, I told Pep that this season is his masterpiece," Estiarte said. "It was a tough year, with no public and different from the previous ones. Yet we won the championship, the League Cup and we reached the Champions League final.”

City will be looking to evolve for the new season, with the club having lost key men in Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia (both of whom departed for Barcelona). In response, the club has been linked with big-money moves for two England internationals currently starring in UEFA Euro 2020.

Striker Harry Kane has made it clear that he wants to leave Tottenham Hotspur and City are one of the only clubs that will be able to afford a transfer fee that is speculated to be anywhere from £100m to £150m, as well as the wages that the England captain would demand.

Yet Spurs are insisting that Kane is going nowhere: “Keeping [Kane] is not just my goal, it's our goal as a club,” said new Tottenham director of football Fabio Paratici. "I haven't heard from him yet because I don't want to bother the players who are busy at the Euros, it doesn't seem fair to me. They're focused on their own goals with their national teams.”

In addition, Jack Grealish has also emerged as a target for the Citizens, with the Aston Villa attacking midfielder widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s best in his position – and he would only improve under the guidance of a technician like Guardiola.

Regardless of whether they can land their transfer targets – and keep a hold of Benjamin Mendy, who has been linked with a move to Internazionale – City still have one of the best squads in the Premier League and arguably the most astute tactician in charge. They will again start the campaign as title favourites.
