Before Europe's top footall leagues get underway in August 2021, we take a look at the top five stars, who watch out for in the 2021/22 season:

Sergio Aguero

The Argentine superstar has been FC Barcelona's marquee signing in the current transfer window and he is back in a league which he knows very well having turned out for Atletico Madrid between 2006 and 2011.

A prolific attacker, who can also play as a second striker and centre forward, Aguero scored 74 goals in 175 La Liga matches during his time with Atletico and he inspired the Madrid giants to UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup glory.

Aguero has unfinished business in Spain as he failed to win the La Liga title with Atletico and he will be determined to play an instrumental role in helping Barcelona clinch the league trophy and he is likely to lead the team's attack with his compatriot Lionel Messi's future at Barcelona uncertain.

However, the man nicknamed Kun will be hoping that his friend, Messi, signs a new deal and stays so that they can rekindle their deadly strike partnership which saw them inspire Argentina to the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal.

Sadio Mane

The Senegalese star will be looking to prove a point after he failed to live up to expectations during the 2020/21 season which saw his team, Liverpool FC fail to retain the Premier League title.

Mane registered 16 goals and eight assists from 48 matches across all competitions which is poor by his high standards having finished fourth for the 2019 Ballon d'Or, and in the award for the Best FIFA Men's Player he ranked fifth in 2019 and fourth in 2020.

However, the 2018/19 Premier League Golden Boot winner's late-season form did inspire the Reds to a top-four finish in the Premier League as he netted four goals in the last seven matches to help his side finish third finish.

The 2021/22 season will be about proving that the reigning CAF African Footballer of the Year remains one of the best attackers in the world as the Reds look to win some silverware.

David Alaba

The Austria international has big shoes to fill at Real Madrid after he joined the Spanish football powerhouse from German champions Bayern Munich on a free transfer.

Having flourished for Bayern as a centre back in the last two seasons, Alaba is seen as a direct replacement for accomplished central defender Sergio Ramos at Madrid with the former La Liga champions having decided against extending the Spain captain's contract which expired last month.

Alaba is widely regarded as one of the best left-backs of his generation and despite his relatively small stature for a defender, he was highly regarded for his aerial ability, courtesy of his elevation, physical strength while playing as a centre back.

The 29-year-old, who is the Austria captain, also boasts leadership skills which makes him an ideal replacement for Ramos, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest captains in the history of Madrid.

The Belgian star will be under pressure to replicate his performances from the 2020/21 season which saw him score 30 goals from 44 matches across all competitions for reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan.

Lukaku also finished the season with 24 league goals, 11 assists - making him the highest scorer on the title-winning team and the second-highest scorer in the league, behind Cristiano Ronaldo of Juventus and he was named Serie A Most Valuable Player.

A large and physically powerful striker, with an eye for goal, Lukaku, 28, has been known to use his physicality to get around defenders having reached double figures in goals in each of his last nine seasons including spells with English clubs Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion and Everton FC.

Inter will pin their hopes of successfully defending their Serie A title on the world-class centre forward, who also won the 2010/11 Belgian Pro League title with RSC Anderlecht.

Jadon Sancho

The English starlet is set to join Manchester United from German giants Borussia Dortmund is one of the biggest deals in the current European transfer window with the deal worth £73 million (€85 million).

Sancho will have to deliver under high expectations at one of England's biggest football clubs having flourished in Germany where he won the Bundesliga Player of the Month for October 2018, February 2020 and February 2021 as a reward for his outstanding performances.

The 21-year-old winger is known for his trickery, pace and use of feints in one-on-one situations and has been described as one of the world's best young players, and he helped Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup during his five-year spell with the club.

Having been nurtured in the academy of United's rivals, Manchester City, Sancho will be looking to dazzle in the Premier League and help the Red Devils end their four-year trophy drought.
