The ‘Blood and Gold’ earned their place in the international tournament thanks to their triumph in the CAF Champions League, which saw them overcome Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the final just over a month ago.

Esperance forward Anice Badri was the top scorer in the CAF Champions League

Moine Chaabani’s team will enter the competition at the second round on December 15 and face either local team Al Ain or New Zealand’s Team Wellington (those two play in the only first round game on Wednesday December 12).

Should the Tunisians progress, they will reach the semfinals and face South American giants River Plate next Tuesday. The Argentines had had a fraught journey to the CWC, with the second-leg of their 2018 Copa Libertadores final against hated rivals Boca Juniors played in Spain due to safety concerns.

River Plate won the 2018 Copa Libertadores

River Plate won the 2018 Copa Libertadores and will be Esperance’s opponents if the Tunisian side progress from the second round.

The other semifinal will see European champions Real Madrid take on either Japan’s Kashima Antlers or Mexican side Guadalajara.

‘Los Blancos’ are the tournament favourites as they chase a hat-trick of Club World Cup titles.
