David Moyes takes on old club Everton

2019/20 Premier League

Round 23

18-19 January

Returning West Ham United manager David Moyes will face one of his old clubs, Everton, in a clash at the London Stadium on Saturday 18 January 2020, kick-off at 18:00. The match is one of 10 spread across the weekend of 18-19 January for the 23rd round of the 2019/20 Premier League season.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti

West Ham come into the match on the back of a narrow and controversial 1-0 loss away to Sheffield United in which they had an equalising goal ruled out by a debatable VAR call. The result left the Hammers in 16th place, just one point above the relegation zone.

"I’m just telling you, I think it’s a really good goal. I think Declan [Rice] deserves great credit for his strength to get through and for that to happen, from my point of view it's not right,” said manager David Moyes on the disallowed goal.

Everton, meanwhile, eased some of the pressure on new manager Carlo Ancelotti with a 1-0 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion to move to within touching distance of the top half of the table.

"The performance for 60 minutes was good,” said Ancelotti. “We were a bit slow at the beginning to build up from the back but after that we were in the game, we could have scored a second one, but naturally at the end when we are only 1-0 up we had more difficulty controlling the game. "But everything was OK, we defended well, suffering a little bit but absolutely normal."

West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble

In head-to-head stats, West Ham and Everton have met in 141 previous matches. The Toffees have claimed 71 wins compared to 40 for the Hammers, while 30 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Goodison Park in October 2019, Everton claimed a 2-0 home win thanks to goals from Bernard and Gylfi Sigurdsson.
