Bournemouth look to give Chelsea the blues

2019/20 Premier League

Round 28

28 February – 1 March 2020

Bournemouth will look to continue their fine recent record against Chelsea when the teams meet at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday 29 February 2020, kick-off at 18:00. The match is one of eight spread from 28 February to 1 March for the 28th round of the 2019/20 Premier League season, with two fixtures postponed due to the League Cup final between Manchester City and Aston Villa.

Bournemouth suffered a major blow in their fight to avoid relegation, losing 3-0 away to Burnley last weekend in a game which was marred by controversial VAR decisions.

"I don't think we dealt with the emotions of [the VAR decisions] very well. The players are human beings and I have to understand how they felt in that moment. I think we were psychologically spent,” said Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.

He added, "There is a big job ahead. We create our own destiny - not VAR, the referees or the studio. There were things we could have done better today, but my support is with the team. I thought we were very harshly treated."

Chelsea, meanwhile, restored some sense of form with a 2-1 home win over London rivals Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Marcos Alonso.

However, manager Frank Lampard was angered by a VAR decision not send off Giovani Lo Celso for a nasty challenge on Cesar Azpilicueta: "I want it to work and help them, and make the game better," said Lampard. "It was so wrong [against Spurs]. Referees have such a difficult job and VAR was brought in to help them. I hate to call for red cards but that is a leg-breaker of a tackle."

In head-to-head stats, Bournemouth and Chelsea have met in 16 previous matches. The Blues have claimed 11 wins compared to five for the Cherries, while zero games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Stamford Bridge in December 2019, Bournemouth claimed a 1-0 away win thanks to a late strike from Dan Gosling. The Cherries have won three of their last four league games against the Blues.
