2020-21 UEFA Champions League

Last 16, first leg

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea & Lazio v Bayern Munich

Tuesday 23 February 2021, 23:00

Continental heavyweights Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich will be the focus of attention when the UEFA Champions League continues with two Last 16, first-leg matches on the evening of Tuesday 23 February 2021.

Atletico find themselves in the unusual position of ‘hosting’ their match in Bucharest, Romania due to Covid-19 travel complications, but will nonetheless be confident of a strong performance – especially if striker Luis Suarez can continue the great form he has shown in La Liga.

“Despite being 34 years old, I am hungrier than ever. We are on a positive streak and the important thing is that we continue like this to be able to reach our objectives because the forward does not perform if he does not have a team that does a great job.”

Chelsea, meanwhile, will hope new manager Thomas Tuchel continues to inspire increasingly better performances, with the former Paris Saint-Germain boss admitting that he has no qualms about laying into his players: “I don't do stuff to be loved by everyone in the dressing room, this is not possible,” he explained.

Defending European champions Bayern Munich, meanwhile, will continue their search for a second straight continental crown when they head to the ‘Eternal City’ of Rome for a clash against in-form Italian club Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

“Lazio were in Dortmund’s group, so I watched the games,” said Bayern forward Thomas Muller. “They’re an opponent who can be very awkward in attack, especially with Ciro Immobile. Caution is advised, but of course we’re looking forward to the next round. Rome is a beautiful city and we have good memories of playing Roma there.”

In head-to-head terms, Lazio and Bayern Munich will be meeting for the first time in any UEFA club competition, while Atletico and Chelsea have been regular combatants in recent years: the Rojiblancos and the Blues have met seven times, with each claiming two wins in the rivalry (alongside three draws).
