Highlights for Kenya this week at the Olympics

Kenyan stars Timothy Cheruiyot, Charles Simotwo and Abel Kipsang are set to participate in the athletics men’s 1500 meters round one at Japan's Olympic Stadium on August 3.
 
Cheruiyot is among the favorites to win the 1500 meters gold medal having won a gold medal in the race at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar.
 
"There are three medals, everybody is fighting for the best place. So Timothy as well is looking for the best place, which is gold," Cheruiyot's coach Bernard Ouma said.

His countrymen Nicholas Kimeli, Daniel Ebenyo and Samwel Masai will also be looking to go all the way and win medals when they take part in the men’s 5000 meters round one on the same day.
 
Ebenyo is the one to watch having earned a spot on the Kenyan team for the Tokyo Olympics after finishing in the top two at the Kenyan Olympic trials after running a personal best 13:05.05. 

On August 4, Julius Yego will begin his bid to win an Olympic gold medal when he competes in the men’s Javelin throw qualifying round.

The 32-year-old won silver with a throw of 88.24 meters at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games despite only throwing once after picking up a right ankle injury. 
 
Yego is the African record and Commonwealth record holder for the event with a personal best of 92.72 meters and he has now set his sights on winning gold in Japan.

Meanwhile, Ruth Chepngetich, Brigid Kosgei, and Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya will participate in the women’s marathon on August 7. 
 
Kosgei, who won the 2018 and 2019 Chicago Marathons and the 2019 and 2020 London Marathons, will be confident of winning the race.

Her compatriots Hellen Obiri, Irene Cheptai and Sheila Chlangat will be in action in the women’s 10 000m final on the same day.
 
All eyes will be on Obiri, who is the current 5000 meters champion after winning gold in the 2017 World Championships and she successfully defended the title at the 2019 World Championships.
