2021/22 English Premier League

Matchday 35

Manchester United v Brentford

Old Trafford
Manchester, England
Monday, 2 May 2022
Kick-off is at 22h00

Manchester United will look to keep their European hopes alive when they host Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday, May 2.

The Red Devils all but blew their chances of finishing in the top four after losing 3-1 against Champions League contenders Arsenal on Saturday.

United's challenge had already looked doubtful following a 4-0 hammering at the hands of arch-rivals Liverpool in midweek and back-to-back defeats have left them six points adrift of the Gunners in sixth spot, having played one game more.

Ralf Rangnick, who will make way for Erik ten Hag at the end of the season, insists the players have to give a response in their next two home encounters against Chelsea and the Bees.

"It's a question again of pride and a question of honour. We owe it to the fans," Rangnick declared. "We have the next two games at home against Chelsea and Brentford.

"We saw a few good things today offensively we had enough and created enough. It's clear we have to defend better in and around the box."

Brentford reached the 40-point mark in the top flight with a goalless draw against Tottenham on Saturday, which extended their unbeaten run to four outings.

The Premier League debutants have secured their status in the top tier for a second consecutive season and head coach Thomas Frank is hopeful that compatriot Christian Eriksen will continue to play a part in their journey.

Eriksen's short-term contract expires at the end of the current campaign and he has attracted interest from some big-name clubs with his standout performances for the west London outfit.

"I would love to say that I am confident, I am very positive and very hopeful that he will stay but it will be a decision at the end of the season," Frank said.

"I will do what I can but it's down to Christian, where it's like everything if you decide to go to one club or another, you buy that house or another house, you take that job or another job.

'There must be pros and cons and I always say if you make it an eight-two decision, where you have eight pros and two cons, then you are in a good position.

"I hope Christian makes the right choice for him and his family and I really hope it will be us."
